DuYu Coffee Roasters
Alice Springs & Red Centre, NT
In a converted warehouse on Hele Crescent, this has been Alice Springs's coffee roaster since 2005, run since 2015 by Kim and Estelle, who took over an already-established local institution rather than starting from nothing. The building is airy and industrial, doubling as a gallery space for local artists between coffee orders, and the sustainability commitments are practical rather than performative, with no disposable cups and drinks served instead in reusable glass jars. Being the coffee roaster for a town this remote, deep in the centre of the country, is a different proposition to running one within a couple of hours of a capital city's green bean importers; freight, distance and a small customer base all cut against the specialty coffee model in ways that rarely apply on the coast. That it has run continuously for two decades, through a change of ownership, says something about the demand for genuinely good coffee even a very long way from the nearest competitor.
